With approximately 40 people in attendance, the Democratic Caucus met on August 8 at the Town Hall to nominate candidates for Town offices. Brenda Adams, Town Chair of the Columbia County Democratic Committee, called the meeting to order and was elected as Chair of the Caucus.
Craig Dillon, Chair of the Nominating Committee, reported the Committee's suggestions for candidates for Town Offices to the Caucus. After holding separate votes by secret ballot, the Caucus chose the following candidates:
For Supervisor: Rick Keaveney
For Town Board:(Two seats open)
For seat one: Carrie Bither
For seat two: No endorsement
For Clerk: Charlotte Cowan
For Highway Superintendent: Bernie Meyer
A Vacancy Committee was established and will be chaired by Brenda
Adams.

The Democratic Caucus for nominating candidates for the Town Board and other elected positions in Canaan will be held at 10AM at the Canaan Town Hall on August 8 2009.
All individuals who are registered members of the Democratic Party and who reside and vote in Canaan are eligible to vote at this meeting.

Annual Meeting January 22, 2009
The Meeting was called to order 7:15 PM
Present:
Brenda Adams, John Adams, David Birch, Craig Dillon, Rosemary Duel, Harold Harrison, Janice Harrison, Marge Lewis, Andy Meier, Ann Vedder constituting a quorum.
Brenda (Town chair) gave an overview of the functions of the Columbia County Democratic Committee and the responsibilities of the town chair.
Marge (Treasurer) reported that our balance is sufficient for current needs.
The annual Financial review will be finished by our next meeting.
Discussion on annual review of the Association's accomplishments and goals: Stressed greater emphasis on the desirability of greater participation by the membership. A suggestion was made to contact Democrats in our neighboring towns (New Lebanon, Hillsdale, Austerlitz) to explore their interest in holding joint meetings with a common speaker or panel to discuss topics included in our Action Agenda. Janice made the motion to accept, Marge 2nd it. Passed.
Discussion of Annual Action Agenda: some re-wording was recommended and additional issues added; also added to goals discussion topics. Revised document to follow. Motion made by Brenda and 2nd by Andy. Passed with revisions. Note this document could change if new issues come up as this is the basis of our platform for the election.
Elections: Present officers stated that they were willing to serve another year, however nominations from the floor were encouraged. Present Slate was nominated by Craig & seconded by Harold One vote in favor of the present slate was cast by Treasurer, Marge.
Task for next meeting: Find more Dems who want to be active.
Next meeting Thursday February 26th at 7 PM at Town Hall.

On January 12, 2007, the Office of the Columbia County Attorney sent a letter to the Canaan Town Board in which they indicate that they are "prepared to coordinate the defense of certain real property tax litigation and to negotiate inter-municipal agreements in furtherance thereof."
